REALITY by Martin Cheung and Topaz Leung
An exhibition of 10 photographic works titled <REALITY> produced by creative duo Studio TM, founded by Martin Cheung and Topaz Leung opens today and runs through26th September this year at Gallery 27. Through a set of "unanimous" portraitures, gazing at different corners of Hong Kong that reflect a "misplacement" of aesthetics, the photographers attempt to explore the environment that imperceptibly shapes our perception and "taste" of the city we’re inhabiting.
How far our city is fabricated and to what extent our taste of aesthetics is standardised? How photography is developed as a medium of capturing, or constructing what we see, as what we "believe" as reality?
<REALITY> is an extension from a series of commissioned fashion photo works by Studio TM, that respond to the above questions by juxtaposing a stylised portrait with a documentary close-up of a street scene in Hong Kong, a hyper-developed city filled with artificial constructions and misplaced "beauty of nature" that constantly contend with the natural landscape, resulting a notion of depersonalised aesthetics that is between reality and the fictitious.
Interspersed between the world of vogue and stylistic experimentation, Hong Kong-based creative duo Martin Cheung and Topaz Leung explore the extensity of visual narrative through their commercial as well as personal/ education projects. <REALITY> is their first collaborative personal work that brings together their art photography/ commercial design background to make a statement about their city and consumer culture from their observation as fashion and advertising photographers.
